Pennsylvania is one of the few states with an inheritance tax that applies to transfers to children and other heirs, not merely to large estates. Life insurance proceeds paid to a named beneficiary are generally treated differently from other assets under that tax, which is a large part of why life insurance does specific work in Pennsylvania estate planning that it does not do everywhere.
