Term life insurance, shopped across several companies
Term life insurance covers you for a set number of years, usually 10, 20 or 30. If you die during that time, your family receives a lump sum that's generally income-tax-free. It's usually the least expensive way to buy a large amount of coverage, which is why most young families start here.
Who it’s for
- Parents with kids at home
- Anyone with a mortgage they don't want to leave behind
- People whose family depends on their paycheck
- Business owners covering a loan or a partner
What I check before I recommend it
- How long you need it. I match the term to your mortgage, or to when the kids will be on their own.
- Whether it converts. Many term policies can become permanent coverage later without a new exam. I check that before you buy.
- Exam or no exam. Several carriers approve healthy applicants without one.
- The same coverage, priced at several companies, so you can see the real difference.
In plain English
How term life works
Mortgage protection is term life sized to your home loan. If something happens to you, the payout can pay off the house so your family can stay in it. I write it as a regular term policy, so the money goes to your family, not straight to the bank, and they decide how to use it.
If you already have life insurance through work, keep it, but check two things: it usually ends when you leave the job, and it's often only one or two times your salary. A personal term policy stays with you wherever you work.
Questions
Term life questions people ask me
How much does term life insurance cost?
It depends on your age, your health, the amount and the length of the term. For a healthy non-smoker in their 30s, a 20-year policy often costs less than people expect. I'll pull quotes from several carriers so you see real numbers, free.
What happens when my term ends?
The coverage stops and so do the payments. Many policies let you renew at a higher price, or convert to permanent coverage without a new medical exam. I'll show you which options a policy has before you buy it.
Is mortgage protection insurance the same as term life?
Mostly, yes. Mortgage protection is usually a term policy sized to your loan. Buying it as regular term means the money goes to your family instead of straight to the lender, and they choose how to use it.
Do I need a medical exam for term life?
Not always. Several carriers approve healthy applicants based on the application and database checks, with no exam. I'll tell you up front whether that route is open to you.
I have life insurance through work. Do I need my own?
Often, yes. Work coverage usually ends when you leave the job and is often only one or two times your salary. A personal policy stays with you, and it's usually cheaper to buy while you're younger and healthy.
