How cash value accumulates
A portion of the economics of a whole life policy supports its cash-value guarantees. The policy schedule shows how guaranteed values develop over time.
Cash value generally builds gradually, and early surrender values may be low compared with the premiums paid.
Guaranteed values versus dividends
Traditional whole life policies generally include guaranteed cash values.
Participating whole life policies may also receive dividends. Dividends depend on insurer experience and are not guaranteed.
Understanding your options
Depending on your contract, you may be able to access cash value through loans, withdrawals, or surrender.
Each option has different consequences. Before accessing cash value, review how the transaction could affect your death benefit, coverage, and taxes.
